Dwight Slone of Prestonburg, Ky., claimed first place at the Indiana State Fair Giant Pumpkin Contest today. His grand gourd tipped the scales at 1,039.5 pounds to overthrow three time champion John Barenie’s entry by 112 pounds.
Slone was worried this year that none of his three Atlantis Giant pumpkins would make it to the Indiana State Fair due to the excessive rains this summer, which may be good for the soybean and corn farmers, but doesn’t make great conditions for giant pumpkins.
“It feels so great to win,” Slone said. “I do what a lot of the other guys do, but I guess I just got lucky this year.”
Just five growers entered this year’s contest. Here are the final results:
Name | Hometown | Pumpkin Weight |
1. Dwight and Karen Stone | Prestonburg, Ky. | 1,039.5 pounds |
2. John Barenie | Griffith, Ind. | 927.5 pounds |
3. David Cantrell | Corryton, Tenn. | 669.5 pounds |
4. Kelly Klinker | Woodburn, Ind. | 373.5 pounds |
5. Mikkal Hodge | Morristown, Ind. | 300.5 pounds |
