Indiana Governor Holcomb Signs Public Health Emergency

Today I declared a public health emergency that calls on state agencies to continue their diligence and cooperation in responding to COVID-19 and ensures that Indiana can seek funding to control and stop the spread of coronavirus.
Free ABCs of Diabetes Classes in March via Marion County Public Health Department
ABCs of Diabetes is a free four-part series on diabetes self-management offered monthly January-November by the Marion County Public Health Department. Topics include diet, medications, exercise, monitoring, and long-term management.
Classes in March will take place at two locations: the Speedway Public Library, 5633 W. 25th St., on Wednesdays, March 9, 16, 23 and 30 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.; and the South District Health Office of the Marion County Public Health Department, 503 National Ave., on Thursdays, March 10, 17, 24 and 31 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Everyone who participates should plan on attending all four sessions of the class. Marion County Public Health Department Announces Flu Shot Clinics
The Marion County Public Health Department will offer low-cost seasonal flu shots at six flu vaccine clinics during the month of October. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the flu vaccine every year for anyone 6 months of age and older.
“Influenza can cause mild to severe illness, and at times be life-threatening resulting in hospitalization,” said Virginia A. Caine, M.D., director of the Marion County Public Health Department. “A seasonal flu shot not only protects the person receiving the vaccine, but helps protect family, friends and others from the virus.”
The flu vaccine is especially important for those who are at high risk of developing serious complications like pneumonia, including:
- People who have certain medical conditions including asthma, diabetes and chronic lung disease
- Pregnant women
- People age 65 and older

Influenza vaccines are $20 for adults and children ages 2-18, and free for children under two years old. Pneumococcal (pneumonia) vaccines are $75 or $155, depending on which type of pneumonia vaccine is recommended for the client. Tetanus (Td or Tdap) vaccine is $25. Medicare and Medicaid are accepted.

It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against the flu. Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by a virus. The flu can cause fever, sore throat, cough, headaches, fatigue, chills and muscle aches.

Indy Public Library Book Sale Sept 11-12 and Sept. 17-19
The Indianapolis Public Library holds several book sales each year at the Indy Library Store (formerly known as the Secondhand Prose Book Sale). The next book sale is Sept 11-12 and Sept. 17-19. Sept. 11 is Friends Night but memberships can be purchased at the door. This allows early access to the store prior to opening day for the general publicon Saturday.

Indianapolis Marion County 2015 Tire Recycle Day Saturday, June 6
Mosquitoes are becoming more active and everyone can take steps to help control the mosquito population in Marion County. One of the easiest ways of doing this is to limit areas of standing water where mosquitoes like to breed. Unused tires, when left outside, can collect water and become an ideal place for mosquitoes to lay eggs.
The Marion County Public Health Department’s Mosquito Control program will host its annual Tire Recycle Day on Saturday, June 6 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at several locations around Indianapolis. In partnership with participating Meineke Car Care Centers, this special tire drop-off event collects used passenger car tires from Marion County residents at no charge.
People can bring up to six passenger car tires, off of the rim. Tire Amnesty Day is for individuals and not for use by tire retailers or auto salvage yards. All tires collected will be recycled.
“Tires attract and retains heat, hold enough water to hatch eggs, and offer protection from predators and chemical treatments,” said Terry Gallagher, supervisor in Mosquito Control at the Marion County Public Health Department. “Proper disposal of old tires controls the mosquito population and reduces the spread of West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne diseases.”

Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation Receives National Recognition
Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation (CCPR) has achieved an unprecedented level of national acclaim during the 2014 NRPA Congress in Charlotte, North Carolina.
In addition to receiving its accreditation from the National Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA), CCPR received a prestigious 2014 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management by The American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA), in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) for parks serving populations of 75,001 to 150.000.
“These achievements are both impressive accomplishments in their own right. The Gold Medal Award is the benchmark by which all agencies wish to be measured – it is like winning the Super Bowl of the parks world,” says Michael Klitzing, Chief Operating Officer for Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation. “Receiving the CAPRA Accreditation is the culmination of months of dedication by our staff to document our policies and procedures to meet the required stringent standards. Less than 120 parks in the United States hold this accreditation and only three in Indiana.”
In the past 10 years, more than $72 million has been invested to purchase new parkland, develop parks and recreational facilities, and make capital replacements within existing parks. For the past two years, CCPR has achieved 85 percent cost recovery on its $11 million combined operating budget.
“This high level of self-sufficiency has afforded CCPR the opportunity to expand its programs, grow and maintain its workforce, and free up tax dollars for capital projects, all for the benefit of the citizens we serve,” says Klitzing.
A banner presentation touting this newest level of excellence will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. in the Monon Community Center gymnasium. The public, media and area dignitaries are invited to attend.
