Early on the morning of December 18, 2024, Joseph Edward Corcoran, 49, was executed by lethal injection at the Indiana State Prison, Michigan City, Indiana. He was pronounced dead at 1:44 am EST, eight minutes after he received a single dose of pentobarbital.
Corcoran was found guilty of the 1997 murders of his brother, his sister’s fiancé, and two of their friends at his house in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and was sentenced to death in 1999.
Previously, Corcoran was charged in 1992 with murdering both of his parents, Jack Corcoran, 53, and Kathryn Corcoran, 47, in Steuben County, Indiana, when he was 16. Due to circumstantial evidence, he was acquitted of all charges.
Attorney General Todd Rokita issued the following statement on December 18, 2024 following Corcoran’s execution:
“Early this morning, Indiana conducted its first execution since 2009. Joseph Corcoran’s case worked its way through our judicial system and today he finally paid his debt to society as justice was provided to his victims.
“A jury recommended and a judge imposed a sentence of death for the senseless murders of four people. My office fought to defend that sentence and state law every step of the way, and the Indiana Department of Correction carried it out professionally.”
