Beech Grove, IN – A 12 year old is in the hospital recovering from injuries sustained after being shot while riding in the back seat of a vehicle on I-465. The shooting stemmed from a road rage incident in which detectives believe two drivers fired shots toward one another’s vehicle while driving on I-465. The driver of the vehicle occupied by the injured child was one of the two people who detectives believe fired shots.

May 2, 2025 at approximately 1:35 p.m. first responders were dispatched to a crash on Emerson Avenue at the ramp from I-465 westbound. Upon arrival, Beech Grove Police Officers found two vehicles with damage from the crash. Inside a black Honda SUV was a 12 year old child that had injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. There was also what appeared to be multiple bullet holes in the rear driver’s side door of the black SUV. The occupants of the other vehicle were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The second vehicle involved in the crash was not involved in the road rage incident, they were on Emerson Avenue.

The 12 year old was rushed to a local hospital and is in stable condition. Also inside the black SUV was an infant who was not injured but was transported to a hospital as a precaution.

A short time after the crash, officers from IMPD and Troopers from ISP located the other vehicle believed to be involved in the shooting on I-465, which also had multiple bullet holes. The vehicle was abandoned, however officers located who they believe to be the driver at a residence nearby.

Indiana State Police Detectives have spoken to all the people involved and the investigation is ongoing at this time. Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene to collect evidence and photograph the scene.

ISP was assisted by the Beech Grove Police Department, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Beech Groove Fire Department and INDOT.

SOURCE: Indiana State Police

CARMEL, Ind. – The State of Indiana last week awarded more than $200 million in matching funds to 245 cities, towns, and counties for local road projects through Community Crossings, a partnership between the Indiana Department of Transportation and Hoosier communities. The City of Carmel received $1.2 million for improvements on Main Street between Illinois Street and Guilford Road.

Main Street from Illinois Street to Old Meridian Street will be resurfaced and the stretch of Main from Old Meridian Street to Guilford Road will be reconstructed. This includes new storm drainage, replacement of aging roadside ditches, and the addition of new ADA-compliant pedestrian facilities.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the Community Crossing Grant,” said Engineering Director Bradley Pease. “These funds are vital for not only improving our roads, but also for ensuring accessibility for all residents.”

The City was also awarded $980K in Federal Highway Administration Highway Safety Improvement Program funds to upgrade the crosswalks at the roundabouts at Hazel Dell Parkway and Main Street and 116th Street and Range Line Road. The addition of raised crosswalks at these intersections is part of a larger initiative that will enhance safety and accessibility throughout the city.

FTA today announced a grant award of $149.9 million to the Indianapolis Public Transportation Corporation (IndyGo) to help fund construction of the Blue Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project in Central Indiana. The 24-mile BRT line will provide fast and frequent public transportation along one of Marion County, Indiana’s main east-west travel corridors. The corridor serves over 28 million visitors for conventions, meetings, and events and supports approximately 150,000 jobs.

The project includes 12 miles of dedicated bus-only lanes in the urban core, helping speed riders on their way. The corridor encompasses some of the region’s largest trip generators, including downtown Indianapolis, the State Capitol, the airport, and the Indianapolis Zoo. The Blue Line will also stop at three high schools and several planned redevelopment areas.

The project includes 60-foot hybrid buses, helping improve air quality. With more than 45,000 people within walking distance of a station in the corridor, service will operate 20 hours per weekday, with frequent service.

BUS LINE CONTROVERSY

The dedicated bus lanes for the completed Red Line and the 78% completed Purple Line, on top of the dangerous dedicated bike lanes, have created massive traffic headaches for vehicular traffic by taking up an already short supply of traffic lanes, especially in downtown Indianapolis. And maybe that’s one of their goals under the misguided guise of “climate change” practices?

While some in Indianapolis would like a better public transportation system, ourselves included, dedicated bus lanes aren’t the answer, especially when the powers that be have repeatedly shot down the idea of light rail that necessitates dedicated infrastructure. Busses do not need their own lanes, so someone needs to explain their expensive creation with a valid argument. We’ll be waiting.

Truth be told, Indianapolis is a commuter city. We like our cars in Indy.

Onto other issues within the community, over the past decade, the eastside community of Irvington raised funds to create streetscapes on Washington Street. Those streetscapes now face potential demolition to make way for the Blue Line. Residents and donors are furious, and who can blame them?

Additionally, IndyGo rolled out electric buses a few years ago that can’t seem to stay charged during colder weather and have to stop in the middle of their routes for a semi-charge to finish out the route. This is completely shortsighted but is on par with the overall administration of Indianapolis. We don’t tend to elect or hire the sharpest tools in the shed around here. We’ll sit back and watch this unfold with the rest of the community. Hopefully, they prove us wrong for a change.

INDIANAPOLIS 7:41 PM, December 12, 2024

INCIDENT TYPE: Shots Fired Call Leads to Officer-Involved Shooting

INCIDENT LOCATION: 921 S Kiel Avenue

ASSIGNED DETECTIVE: Sgt. Michael Duke; Michael.Duke@indy.gov

The information provided is preliminary and subject to change.

On Thursday, December 12, 2024, just before 3:40 p.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Southwest District officers responded to the 900 block of S Kiel Avenue on a shots fired run. The suspect fled prior to the officers arriving. However, the 911 caller gave officers a suspect description and stated the suspect armed and in the area.

A short time later, another witness told officers the suspect was still armed and on foot within the apartment complex. The officer located the suspect inside the apartment complex and gave the suspect several commands during the encounter. The suspect refused to obey the officer’s orders and ran from the officer on foot.

Officers chased the suspect on foot for several blocks, giving loud verbal commands while pursuing the suspect. While fleeing from officers, in the 1100 block of S Waldemere Avenue, the suspect fired at least one shot at as approaching marked IMPD police car, striking the front bumper. The police car was being driven by an IMPD officer. After the suspect fired, an officer who was chasing the suspect on foot then discharged his firearm, striking the suspect. Officers continued to give verbal commands and slowly approached the suspect, where he was taken into custody.

After additional backup arrived, officers rendered aid to the suspect, who was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. He received a graze wound to his neck and is expected to survive.

Officers located a handgun next to the suspect (a photo of the handgun is attached).

Detectives learned that there was a disturbance in the apartment complex, where the suspect fired at least three rounds in the air before officers arrived. It is also alleged the suspect pointed a gun at relatives.

The suspect is facing preliminary charges that are still being determined. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO) responded to the scene to assist in the investigation and will make the final charging decision.

No uninvolved community members were injured during this incident.

The officers were equipped with body-worn and in-car cameras activated during this incident.

The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to identify and collect potential forensic evidence.

Detectives are confident there is no ongoing threat to the community. There is no suspect outstanding.

The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene to conduct the criminal investigation.

A separate administrative investigation is being conducted by IMPD Internal Affairs. The officer who fired his gun has been placed on administrative leave as is standard procedure in an officer involved shooting investigation.

The civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will conduct a mandatory hearing for any attempted use of deadly force against a person. This occurs after the conclusion of the criminal process.

The Police Officer Support Team (POST) responded to provide peer support for officers. The IMPD Chaplain’s Office responded to assist with those involved.

The IMPD Victims Assistance Unit responded to assist everyone involved.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Michael Duke with the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) by calling 317-327-3475. Alternatively, anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 317-262-TIPS.
