Paul Skenes: From LSU to Team USA – A Rising Star’s Journey

On May 13, 2025, the Pittsburgh Pirates announced that their ace pitcher, Paul Skenes, will represent Team USA in the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC). This exciting news, shared via an X post, highlights Skenes’ meteoric rise in professional baseball and his potential to help Team USA reclaim the WBC title after their loss to Japan in 2023.

Skenes, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, has already made waves in his young career. During his time at LSU, he led the Tigers to a 2023 College World Series victory, earning the Most Outstanding Player award with a 1.69 ERA and an NCAA Division I-leading 209 strikeouts in 122.2 innings. His triple-digit fastball and wipeout slider drew comparisons to Stephen Strasburg, marking him as a generational talent.

A Brief but Impactful Stint with the Indianapolis Indians

Before making his MLB debut with the Pirates, Skenes honed his skills in the minors, including a short but impressive stint with the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians in 2024. During his time with the Indians, Skenes showcased his dominance, posting a sub-2.00 ERA across a handful of starts and consistently hitting 100 mph on the radar gun. His time in Indianapolis was a crucial stepping stone, allowing him to refine his command and prepare for the big leagues. Pirates fans on X were quick to buzz about his performances, with many predicting he’d soon become a cornerstone of the franchise.

Skenes’ Rookie Season and Team USA Selection

Skenes made his MLB debut in May 2024, and his rookie season was nothing short of spectacular. He finished with a 1.96 ERA and 150 strikeouts over his first 22 starts, a stat line unmatched in the Modern Era, according to MLB. On May 11, 2025, he threw 17 pitches at 100 mph or faster in a single game, including a 101.9 mph fastball—the fastest recorded by a Pirates pitcher in the pitch-tracking era (since 2008). His seven strikeouts in his debut were the second-most by a Pirates starter aged 21 or younger, cementing his place as a future star.

Now, Skenes is set to take his talents to the international stage. The 2026 WBC, scheduled for March, will see Team USA, led by captain Aaron Judge, aim to reclaim the title. Skenes’ selection is a testament to his skill and the growing momentum for the tournament, with stars like Mike Trout also expressing interest in returning. After Team USA’s runner-up finish in 2023, Skenes’ addition could be the key to securing gold in 2026.

What This Means for Team USA and the WBC

The World Baseball Classic has become a global showcase for baseball, with the 2023 tournament drawing record viewership and highlighting the sport’s international growth. Team USA, managed by Mark DeRosa, is building a formidable roster, but pitching has often been a challenge due to the tournament’s timing during Spring Training. Skenes, with his electric stuff and competitive fire, could be a game-changer, especially against powerhouses like Japan and the Dominican Republic.

For Pirates fans, seeing Skenes don the stars and stripes is a point of pride, though some on X expressed frustration with the team’s recent struggles, with comments like, “Cool. He can finally play for a team that might win a game.” Regardless, Skenes’ participation in the WBC is a milestone in his career and a chance to elevate his profile further.

Looking Ahead

As Skenes prepares for the 2026 WBC, all eyes will be on how he performs on the global stage. His journey—from a two-way star at Air Force, to a national champion at LSU, to a brief stop with the Indianapolis Indians, and now a key piece for Team USA—shows why he’s one of baseball’s most exciting young talents. Will he lead Team USA to glory? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: Paul Skenes is a name baseball fans won’t forget anytime soon.

Purdue Football revealed the kickoff time for their 2025 matchup against Notre Dame, set for 3:30 PM ET on September 20 in South Bend, Indiana, as part of the Shillelagh Trophy Game. The game will be broadcast on NBC, marking Purdue’s first confirmed game time of the 2025 season.

Historically, Purdue has struggled in this rivalry, with Notre Dame leading the series 57-26-2, including a dominant 66-7 victory in their last meeting in 2024.

The Shillelagh Trophy, awarded to the winner of this annual clash, has been in Notre Dame’s possession since 2014. Purdue aims to rebound after a challenging 2024 season, where they finished with a 1-11 record, prompting significant roster changes through the transfer portal.

Notre Dame, coming off a 2024 season that saw them reach the College Football Playoff, is expected to be a formidable opponent with a strong running back room led by Jeremiyah Love.

On April 15, 2025, Hyundai Motor America announced that driver Robert Wickens will take on the grueling ADAC RAVENOL 24 Hours Nürburgring race, scheduled for June 21-22, 2025. This marks a significant milestone for Wickens, who has been paralyzed from the waist down since a 2018 IndyCar accident. Competing in a Hyundai Elantra N TCR equipped with state-of-the-art Bosch hand controls, Wickens’ participation in the legendary “Green Hell” race symbolizes resilience and technological innovation.

Wickens, a former Mercedes-AMG DTM driver, and TCR Championship winner, has defied the odds since his life-altering accident. His journey back to competitive racing, including a return to the track in 2022 with Hyundai, highlights his determination. “I’m always striving to be the best version of myself, both on and off the track,” Wickens said. “Hyundai, Bosch, and Bryan Herta Autosport have an incredible team spirit, and I’m thrilled for this chance to compete in one of the world’s most demanding endurance races.”

The Nürburgring 24 Hours, held on the iconic 15.7-mile Nordschleife and GP-Strecke circuits, is known for its extreme conditions and challenging layout. Wickens will rely on Bosch’s advanced hand-control system, which debuted in the 2024 IMSA races. This system, built on Bosch’s electronic brake system (EBS) module, offers improved braking consistency, faster response rates, and enhanced diagnostics, making motorsport more accessible and safer.

“After debuting our new Bosch brake system in 2024, it was clear it was a big step forward in safety and braking feel,” Wickens noted. Jacob Bergenske, director of Bosch Motorsport in North America, added, “This project is a true embodiment of our company ethos, ‘Invented for Life,’ and exemplifies our pursuit of bringing innovative solutions to improve lives.”

Wickens’ participation in the Nürburgring 24 Hours is a testament to human potential and the power of adaptive technology. Follow his journey on Hyundai’s social media channels for updates on this inspiring story.

ZIONSVILLE, IN – Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL) announced today that British racing driver Toby Sowery has been named a reserve and development driver for the team’s NTT INDYCAR SERIES program for select events.

Sowery, 28, made three INDYCAR SERIES starts in 2024 with Dale Coyne Racing and gained a combined 19 positions before the checkered flag at races in Mid-Ohio, Toronto, and Portland. He also recently showcased his versatility as one of the fastest-rising talents in endurance racing in both LMP2 and GT3, with wins in the prestigious Asian Le Mans Series and the renowned Dubai 24 Hours in January.

He will serve as an R&D development driver on Honda’s Driver-in-the-Loop (DiL) simulator, assist the team’s engineering department by trialing and providing feedback regarding hybrid deployment strategies on the simulator and will provide feedback from the DiL regarding RLL vehicle models.

1986 Indianapolis 500 winner, and RLL co-owner, Bobby Rahal said, “We’re excited to have Toby join RLL. He’s shown exceptional talent, resilience, and maturity, not just in INDYCAR but also with his recent endurance racing success. Winning a prestigious race like the Dubai 24 Hours highlights his adaptability and mental toughness – qualities we deeply value at RLL. Toby’s experience and versatility will undoubtedly strengthen our team as we aim for competitive excellence this season.”

ZIONSVILLE, IN – Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL) announced today that two-time Indianapolis 500 champion, Takuma Sato, will return to the team for the 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500. AMADA AMERICA, Inc., a leading global machine tool manufacturer and supplier in the sheet metal industry, will again be the primary sponsor for 2017 and 2020 Indy 500 winner Sato’s No. 75 Honda-powered entry in the May 25 event as they were in 2024.

Sato competed for RLL in 2012 and from 2018-2021 as well as last year’s Indy 500 with primary sponsorship from AMADA. He has earned six NTT INDYCAR SERIES wins, four of which have come with RLL, including the team’s second Indy 500 win in 2020. Sato competed in oval races with Chip Ganassi Racing in 2023 and returned to RLL in 2024 for the Indy 500. He set the second fastest qualifying speed of Honda-powered drivers in 2024, his 15th time to participate in the Greatest Spectacle in Racing and sixth with RLL.

The team’s relationship with AMADA goes back to 2023 when the manufacturer was the primary sponsor of the team’s No. 30 entry at the Children’s of Alabama Indy Grand Prix at Barber Motorsports Park on April 30, 2023. In addition to being the primary sponsor of Sato’s entry in the 2024 Indianapolis 500, they were also a major associate sponsor of the team’s No. 30 entry at the 2024 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, near their Buena Park, Calif. Headquarters and primary sponsor at Portland.

Sato, a native of Tokyo, Japan, has made 221 starts in the INDYCAR SERIES since his rookie season in 2010, which is seventh among active drivers and 22nd all-time. His Indy car highlights include wins in the 2017 and 2020 Indianapolis 500, 2013 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, 2018 Portland Grand Prix, 2019 Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama and Bommarito 500 at WWT Raceway, with four of the six coming with RLL. Of his 14 podium finishes to date, 10 have come with RLL as have three of his 10 Indy car poles. Prior to joining the INDYCAR SERIES, he competed in 90 Formula One races between 2002-2008 with his highest finish of third at the 2004 United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“This is a significant milestone for Spike and Vanguard,” expressed Farran Davis, team development manager for RVA Graphics Motorsports. “The partnership between a global leader like Vanguard and a talented professional driver like Spike, it’s a perfect match. Vanguard recognizes Spike’s immense potential, and we look forward to welcoming Vanguard to the team.”

“I look forward to representing the Vanguard brand on the racetrack and in the paddock,” added Kohlbecker. “Vanguard engines are well-known for their robust design, performance, and longevity even in demanding environments—qualities that are just as crucial for commercial engines as they are for a professional race car driver!”

“We’ve been following Spike’s motorsport journey since he started in karts, often racing one of our Briggs Racing engines,” said Dan Roche, marketing director for Briggs & Stratton. “His exceptional work ethic, both at the track and in school, aligns perfectly with our employees, OEM partners, dealers, and commercial customers. We proudly support a team and driver who understand that preparation equals results.”

INDIANAPOLIS (Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2025) – Penske Entertainment announced several updates to its senior leadership structure today in order to best position the organization to capitalize on significant growth opportunities ahead.

Key changes shared this morning include:

Doug Boles will serve as President of both INDYCAR and Indianapolis Motor Speedway, succeeding Jay Frye.

Mark Sibla will be promoted to Senior Vice President, INDYCAR Competition & Operations.

Kyle Novak will become INDYCAR’s Vice President of Officiating and Race Control.

Alex Damron has been named Chief Marketing Officer, INDYCAR, while also continuing as Vice President of Corporate Communications for Penske Entertainment.

Louis Kissinger will be promoted to General Manager, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Operations.

Doug Boles brings decades of motorsport experience to his new responsibilities, including being the President of Indianapolis Motor Speedway since 2013. At IMS, he oversaw the sellout of the 100th Indianapolis 500, the first full-capacity crowd in the event’s storied history. In addition, he’s managed more than $150 million in strategic investment at the Racing Capital of the World, including “Project 100” and significant infrastructure improvements following the acquisition of IMS by Penske Corp.

Across his tenure at IMS, he has been particularly lauded for his promotional prowess and strategic marketing capabilities, growing the Speedway’s global reach and better connecting Indy 500 fans to the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. As a founding partner and Chief Operating Officer at Panther Racing and as Hulman & Company’s Vice President of Communications, he has worked extensively within the INDYCAR paddock, as well. At Panther Racing, Boles helped lead the team to 15 INDYCAR SERIES race wins and two INDYCAR SERIES championships, in addition to seven INDY NXT by Firestone race wins and a championship. In total, he has more than 20 years of executive leadership experience in motorsports, within team operations, sponsorship, marketing, public relations and more.

“Doug is the ideal choice to lead both INDYCAR and IMS as we enter a new era of opportunity and visibility,” said Penske Entertainment President & CEO Mark Miles. “He’s an exceptional leader and motivator who is appreciated by our fans and respected by our owners, drivers, partners and additional key stakeholders.”

Said Boles: “Racing is in my DNA, and no form of racing resonates more personally and strongly with me than the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. I’m honored to lead the amazing team at INDYCAR, and I truly believe the future is bigger and brighter than ever for our sport and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I’m extremely grateful to Mark Miles for this opportunity, and fans can rest assured the hard work is already under way and 2025 will be a fantastic season.”

Boles becomes President of INDYCAR as Frye departs the organization following 10 years in the role. During Frye’s tenure, he led a period of tremendous successes at INDYCAR, including securing the entitlement series sponsorships with Verizon and NTT, the development of the AK18 universal aero kit, development and implementation of the total driver cockpit safety solution aeroscreen and state-of-the-art hybrid technology introduction. In addition, Jay Frye also oversaw an expanded grid with incredible competition.

“It has been an absolute honor and privilege to be the President of INDYCAR and work alongside the dedicated and talented men and women at INDYCAR and in the INDYCAR paddock,” Frye said. “The growth and success the series has had over the last 10 years would not be possible without the commitment and collaboration of the owners, drivers and teams.”

In both his role at INDYCAR and as IMS President, Boles will report to Penske Entertainment President & CEO Miles. As Boles manages strategic vision and priorities across both INDYCAR and IMS, several additional staffing updates will help oversee day-to-day operations within each organization.

At INDYCAR, Mark Sibla has been named Senior Vice President of INDYCAR Competition and Operations. He has been a senior member of INDYCAR’s management team for more than a decade and will lead workstreams focused on general operations and special initiatives such as development of the new car.

Also at INDYCAR, Kyle Novak begins an enhanced role as Vice President of Officiating and Race Control. In this position he will lead both the Race Control and Race Tech teams at INDYCAR, responsible for ensuring rigorous and equitable enforcement of NTT INDYCAR SERIES and INDY NXT presented by Firestone competition regulations. Novak has served as INDYCAR’s Race Director since the 2018 season and was elected to the FIA General Assembly in 2022.

In addition, as INDYCAR prepares for new levels of audience exposure through its relationship with FOX Sports, Alex Damron has been named Chief Marketing Officer, charged with fully implementing a maximized and unified promotional plan for the sport. In this role, he will lead the marketing and communications teams at INDYCAR. He will also continue as Vice President of Corporate Communications for Penske Entertainment, responsible for overseeing IMS PR efforts and Penske Entertainment’s photo and editorial operations.

“We’re confident Alex is ready for this opportunity,” Miles said. “He’s played an integral role in our transition to FOX Sports, driving significant work to implement the phenomenal promotional initiatives we’ve already seen, ensuring we can quickly and efficiently leverage new opportunities.”

At IMS, Kissinger steps into the role of General Manager, IMS Operations, leading teams responsible for suite/hospitality sales, track operations and event operations. Kissinger began his career at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway serving as a distinguished Orr Fellow, with his most recent role being Director of Event Operations & Experience at IMS.

Indianapolis, IN – One of the most prestigious events in dirt racing is set to return this summer as the BC39 presented by Avanti Windows & Doors heads back to The Dirt Track at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for its seventh running on a new date, July 1-2.

The United States Auto Club (USAC) NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship will once again take center stage as drivers race for victory on the quarter-mile dirt oval inside Turn 3 of IMS. This is the first time the BC39 has taken place in early July, as four of the previous events occurred in September and the other two in August.

Action among the top Midget racers in the country will open Tuesday, July 1, with the 39-lap feature race set for Wednesday night, July 2. The event honors the memory of Bryan Clauson, a three-time Indianapolis 500 starter and four-time USAC national driving champion.

Ticket renewals and applications will be open from Feb. 11-21, with tickets going on sale to the general public on Wednesday, Feb. 26. Visit IMS.com for complete details and to renew, apply for, or buy tickets.

Cannon McIntosh took the lead with slightly more than one lap remaining to win the BC39 last September in an unforgettable finish. He joins a list of BC39 winners that includes NASCAR Cup Series champion and Brickyard 400 presented by PPG winner Kyle Larson and short-track stars Justin Grant, Buddy Kofoid, Zeb Wise, and Brady Bacon. No driver has ever won this coveted race more than once.

The DETER is a quickly deployable barrier designed to protect critical assets and soft targets from vehicular attacks. It’s adaptable to various lane widths, road surfaces and environmental conditions. At the Indy 500, the barrier was deployed multiple times and used as a temporary road closure, enhancing the safety of more than 300,000 fans in attendance over the Memorial Day weekend.

“CISA is excited we were able to help deploy the DETER barrier at the Indy 500. With both seats now filled, the team is laser-focused on building momentum and delivering standout performances throughout the year, aiming for an exceptional season ahead for Juncos Hollinger Racing.”

Brad Hollinger, Co-Owner of JHR, shared, “Conor is an outstanding addition to our team. He is a fantastic ambassador for the sport and has proven his speed not only in our car, but also through his tested tenure in the series. Providing him with more opportunities to collaborate closely with our engineers and crew will undoubtedly enhance the team’s performance, and empower his own unrelenting drive for success.”

“Our main priority this year is to build upon the success we’ve seen in the team’s short three-year campaign,” explained Dave O’Neill, Team Principal of Juncos Hollinger Racing. “With Conor joining the team and Sting Ray already confirmed, we’re well-positioned to achieve that. This is just the beginning of a long-term process to build a stronger and more competitive foundation for the future.”

“It has been a huge thrill for Lucas Oil to be the title sponsor of an iconic track like Indianapolis Raceway Park for so many years, and we’re proud to announce this new, long-term extension,” said Brandon Bernstein, Director of Partnership Marketing for Lucas Oil. “This has been a tremendous relationship, and it means a great deal for Lucas Oil to be associated with the track and all of the amazing events that take place there. The future of the park is looking incredibly bright, with new plans in place that will keep Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park as one of the premier motorsports and NHRA drag racing facilities in the country.”
