NEW YORK — There was never a doubt in the minds of the Cabot Creamery CooperativesMOOthie team that they would establish a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS® mark for the World’s Largest sMOOthie this past Saturday at the Bike Expo New York. And they did it in colossal fashion, with the record setting sMOOthie coming in at a massive 400 US Gallons! If this had been soda, needless to say Mayor Bloomberg would not have been pleased.
The record-setting effort took place on May 3(rd) at Bike Expo New York, held on Pier 36 in Basketball City, New York, NY. The Expo drew more than 50,000 attendees this year.
“I’m so proud of everyone on our team who helped us set a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS record,” said Cabot’s New York Market Manager and team leader, Karen Houchens. “It was a great team effort led by our farmers and staff, and when it was all over we were exhausted but happy that we were able to raise more than $6,000 in cash and product donations for Food Bank For New York City.”
The logistics of keeping all of the ingredients flowing to the team members who were blending the product was monumental. “We needed to keep a steady flow of ice, Cabot Lowfat Vanilla Bean Greek-Style Yogurt, and bananas going to the blending team,” said Houchens. “It was a real challenge because we were not able to store all the ingredients in our event tent – there was simply too much product, so we had to have team runners replenish supplies throughout the day. It was a great team effort and we are all proud of this fun accomplishment.”
The 400-gallon sMOOthie required more than 3,200 fresh bananas, one ton of ice, and nearly 1,000 pounds of Cabot Lowfat Vanilla Bean Greek-Style Yogurt.
“We were proud to be part of this fun but important event to help raise money and awareness for Food Bank For New York City,” said Vitamix Community Relations Manager, Wendy Manfredi. “We are equally pleased that our Vitamix blenders proved to be more than up to the challenge of making 400 gallons of record-setting Cabot Smoothies. It was a great event for a great cause.”
Throughout the course of the record-setting event, the public was invited to pitch in by riding a human-powered bicycle blender to make Cabot sMOOthies over the course of the seven-hour process.
“The action was non-stop,” said Cabot farmer/owner Sheri Boardman, who was one of the team’s blender operators. “As soon as one of our prep team members filled a Vitamix blender pitcher with the ingredients, we placed it on the blender base, mixed it to the right consistency, and then immediately poured it into our holding vessel. There wasn’t a minute to spare between pitchers. It was challenging – but then again, no one ever said setting a world record would be easy.”
Supporting the team’s effort were Sheri’s parents Doug and Chris Carlson, who own and operate Carlwood Farm in Canaan, CT.
“This was a remarkable event,” Chris said. “It was a great way for us to promote our brand as well as support those in need by raising funds for Food Bank For New York City.”
The former GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS mark for the World’s Largest Smoothie was held by a team of students from Fresno State University. They created a smoothie on April 13 that was 1,438 liters (380 US gallons) of orange juice, yogurt, and frozen strawberries.
The 400-gallon Cabot sMOOthie marks Cabot’s third Guinness World Record. Cabot established and still holds the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the largest-ever grilled cheese sandwich, 320 pounds) set on November 4, 2000 in Everglades City, FL, and The World’s Largest Mac & Cheese (2,469 pounds) set in 2010 in New Orleans.
Going for a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title was especially poignant for Cabot New York Market Manager Karen Houchens, whose territory was so badly devastated by Hurricane Sandy last October.
“Like all of Cabot’s GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS official attempts, we do this for charity,” Houchens said. “We are proud of the money we raised and we know the money will be put to great use by Food Bank For New York City.”
Once the record was established and the formalities of the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS certification were complete, the 400-gallon sMOOthie was passed out to event attendees in commemorative World’s Largest sMOOthie cups for a suggested one-dollar donation to Food Bank For New York City.
